Grading guidelines

Correctness
The correct execution of a technique is a primary requirement.

Serious errors in the technique will result in a score of 5; minor errors will result in lower marks.

Concentration and resolve
A 100% commitment to each technique is a basic requirement throughout the grading.

Students are expected to show courage and good martial spirit as exemplified in the “Kihap” (shout).

Accuracy
All techniques must be accurate and hit the target, whether it is in the air or against an opponent.

An inaccurate technique is a wasted technique.

Endurance
Students must be able to maintain power, speed and commitment to techniques throughout the grading and should ensure they are fit enough to undertake the grading.

Understanding the Technique
Students should demonstrate an understanding of techniques and how they are applied to “real” self defence situations.

Open mind
Students should view the grading as a learning opportunity either by a greater understanding of technique or the “deeper” learning involved in helping fellow students/instructors.  Students who are “referred” must see this as a leaning opportunity and react accordingly.

Self control
Students are expected to maintain good self control throughout the grading.

Notice will be taken to how students cope with pressure, injury, loss and in particular “winning” e.g.; in sparring.

Responsibility
All students are expected to behave responsibly throughout the grading.  Senior grades and older students are expected to help, maintain order and decorum and in particular help lower grades and children.

General appearance
It is disrespectful to instructors and fellow students to present yourself in an unkempt manner.  Uniforms must be clean, in good condition and students should have good personal hygiene.  You’re grading starts the instant you do balk (uniform) is worn.
